During the summer holidays, some of our Twenties and Thirties group met to continue with the topic of Discerning God’s Will. One of those who attended, Lientjie Jooste, has written this report about the evening:
After a busy week, about 15 of us gathered for some quality time with brothers and sisters in Christ and with the Word. Over delicious Chinese food, we caught up with one another after many had been travelling over the summer, and then we worshipped together to the sound of violin accompaniment. We were delighted to have our elder, Brad Bitner speaking to us again, and this time his wife Kathi was also able to join us – a rare treat.
Brad has been working through James C. Petty’s book Step by Step: Divine Guidance for Ordinary Christians with us, and on this occasion we discussed the 3 circles of God’s will. We covered things prohibited and commanded by Scripture, Christian liberty, the need for wisdom by grace through faith, and determining what is most pleasing to God. This thought struck many of us, because it should be applied in all aspects of our lives: what pleases God most when you are at work, when you are with your boyfriend or girlfriend or spouse, when you are tired and grumpy and alone at home? By thinking about pleasing God in all aspects of your life, God’s will becomes so much clearer, especially when paired with the knowledge we gain from Scripture.
Colossians 1:9-12 puts it much better than I could:
“We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.”
Twenties and Thirties is meeting again on 22nd September. We look forward to having everyone back after the summer and welcoming new faces! If you would like more information please get in touch.
